Is your past stealing your future?
Have you heard of the iceberg theory popularised by Sigmeund Freud. He illustrates that 95 % of our behaviours and beliefs come from our mental life that lies beneath the surface. This metaphor represents the three levels of the mind: the conscious (visible tip), the preconscious (just below the surface), and the unconscious (vast submerged portion). The conscious mind consists of thoughts and perceptions that are fully aware at any moment, while the preconscious contains memories and thoughts that are not currently conscious but can be accessed with effort. The unconscious mind, however, is where much of our behaviour is influenced by hidden drives, fears, desires, and memories that shape our actions without our direct knowledge. This theory remains a powerful image of how much of our mental life lies hidden beneath the surface, offering insights into the structure and function of the mind.
